The day before a wedding

A small ritual we keep before every wedding — and what it tells us about the day ahead.

We always do a venue walkthrough the day before, even when we've shot there a dozen times. Light changes by season. Rooms get re-arranged. The corner that was perfect in June reads completely different in February.

It's a forty-minute drive most weekends and it's the highest-leverage forty minutes of the whole job. We pick the first-look spot. We clock where the sun lands at the ceremony hour. We meet the coordinator, find the back hallway, learn which doors stick.

By the time the morning comes, nothing about the venue is a surprise. We get to spend the day looking at the people instead.
